How Can Chiropractic Treatment Help Text Neck?

Written By Martinez Chiropractic Center on November 20, 2017

Do you go through most days with inexplicable neck pain? You’re likely a victim of “text neck,” a modern medical term used to describe the chronic pain caused from looking down at an electric screen for hours each day. The condition might sound crazy, but it’s leading to dire consequences for thousands of people around the world today.

What Is Text Neck?

As the name implies, text neck is a condition caused by overusing your neck, shoulder, and back muscles by bending your neck for hours each day. While you can conceivably get the ailment from reading books, the ubiquity of cell phones has caused the prevalence of text neck to explode throughout the modern world.

A study found that close to 80% of the adult population under 44 has their cell phone on them for all but two hours of the day, which puts unprecedented strain on neck muscles to support the head. Just tilting your head downwards a few degrees multiplies the force put on the neck from 12 pounds to about 60, which can lead to significant health complications over time.

When left untreated, text neck can result in disc herniation, pinched nerves, and an overly straight spine. These conditions can lead to chronic pain, tightness in the back, and tightness in the nervous system that can cause pain and tingling throughout your body, especially your arms and hands.

How Can Chiropractic Treatment Help Text Neck?

Text neck is not a condition to be ignored. If you start to notice the symptoms of text neck, it’s a good idea to improve your posture throughout the day and hold your phone at eye level whenever possible. If your symptoms don’t improve, it’s smart to seek chiropractic treatment for text neck.

When you visit your chiropractor, they will help improve the state of your back and develop a treatment plan to ensure that your neck won’t be in a painful position and can start to heal.
